Small Cabin-Loft House Plans
Description: Primary living level at grade on crawl space (or slab) with covered porch(s). Steeper main roof permits legal/accessible loft space. These home designs are based on a nominal 24′ deep x 32′ long base footprint which is dimensionally efficient. The primary bedroom and a legal stair both taking space in this modest footprint make these designs a layout challenge.
Size: 768 sf footprint on the main living level. This small footprint lead to the use of the term ‘cabin’. Useful loft space varies and increases thru the design sequence. Design#8 in fact would better be defined as a 2 level design.
Style: Style is flexible, and a variety of ‘looks’ have been purposefully incorporated, suiting a variety of building environments. Most ‘looks’ can be mixed and matched to other plan configurations in the series.

Configuration: A 1 1/2 story format with a consistent, efficient and modest 24′ deep x 32′ long footprint (768 sf). This series experiments with different ways to manage this same size footprint in both plan and style. Most designs retain a 1 story look, use a steeper 12 in 12 roof pitch, and capture a varying amount of loft space. Construction complexity and cost increases with when (any) simple gable roof adds differing planes and dormers as happens this series gaining both space and visual interest. Other than the modest size of these designs, this series has not been developed using a minimal cost criteria.
Mix and Match: Style from one design may be adapted to a plan from another design. Adapting and interchanging plan ideas is more difficult as these small plans don’t have any built in flexibility. Stair locations are particularly inflexible. Adapting, altering outdoor living spaces is possible, conditional on the design.
Site and Foundation: These footprints are small. Finding enough close to flat area on a site is reasonable. Foundations are drawn with the default crawl space. Slab foundation substitutions are also reasonable.
Front and Side: Some of these designs have ‘side’ approaches, and some have ‘front’ approaches. This distinction is based on assuming the 24′ wall is a side, and the 32′ wall is the front. Architecturally both sides and fronts have been composed such that either approach direction is fine- so either works based on the site or lot condition.
